Before you leave Brazil
- Leaving Brazil for good does not end your Brazilian tax residence by itself: you must file the Comunicação de Saída Definitiva do País with the Receita Federal, from the departure date until the last day of February of the following year. Filing it sets your non-resident status, but you must still file the Declaração de Saída Definitiva do País the next year and pay any tax due. (gov.br — Comunicar saída definitiva do país (Receita Federal))
- If you keep a Brazilian company, dividends it pays, credits or remits abroad are withheld at 10% (Lei 9.249 art. 10 §4, as amended by Lei 15.270/2025; effective from 1 January 2026; dividends from profits up to 2025 whose distribution was approved by 31 December 2025 are not subject to it, art. 10 §5). If you set up a company abroad that you control, its profits are taxed on 31 December each year at 15% under Lei 14.754/2023 in the cases of art. 5 (including low-tax jurisdictions). (Lei 15.270/2025, art. 3 (new art. 10 §§4–5 of Lei 9.249) and art. 8, Lei 14.754/2023, arts. 2 e 5)
